Our local club, AFC Sudbury, which we are proud to sponsor, has made it through to the first-round proper of the Emirates FA Cup following a memorable 3:1 win over Dartford at the weekend. This is only the second time in the club’s history that they have made it through to first round of the world’s oldest cup competition, which is a remarkable achievement and particularly as AFC Sudbury are the lowest ranked club in the competition.
Despite Dartford, who were unbeaten this season and sit at the top of the National League South (two tiers above AFC Sudbury) taking the lead just before half time, AFC Sudbury emerged victorious, with 3 sensational goals scored in the second half including a 93rd minute stoppage time goal, to secure the victory. What is particularly impressive is that more than half of the squad came via the clubs academy including the Captain who was man of the match and two of the goal scorers. This is a real testament to the club and in particular the hard work and skill of the academy staff who help to develop players who can perform consistently at this level.
Now onto round one of the FA Cup and AFC Sudbury have been drawn against local club Colchester (two tiers above them) for what is sure to be a thrilling local derby. Colchester will only have to travel a short 15 miles to the stadium which is expected to be allowed full capacity of circa 2,500 spectators and is likely to be one of the four first round matches televised by the BBC. This is one match that is not to be missed.
Congratulations to AFC Sudbury. Making history and giving the town of Sudbury and surrounding areas a huge boost after what has been a turbulent 18 months with lockdown after lockdown.
